Panthers Shock Lady Devils
May 14, 2009 By Denis Vass of Graham High School
The Lady Red Devils went up against Orange High School in the semi-finals of the Mid-State 2-A Tournament, only to fall tantalizingly short by a 3-1 score. The Panthers' catcher Caty Everhart popped a 2-run home run with 2 outs in the bottom of the 7th inning to lead Orange into the championship game against Northwood.
Northwood edged past Cedar Ridge in the other semi-final game, scoring 3 runs in the bottom of the 7th to win 7-6. The Chargers defense was shaky, committing 7 errors. The Red Wolves had a 5-0 lead after 3 innings.
The game was a pitchers duel, with McKinzie Creech throwing a 1-hitter against Graham, while Kaytelyn Storey pitched a 5-hitter for Graham. Creech struck out 11 Red Devils, only walking 1 batter, but hit 2 Graham batters. Storey walked one, but hit 3 Panthers.
Graham scored their only run in the 6th inning, with Brittney Willliams driving in Claudia Waggoner, who had reached base on a walk, stole second, advanced to third on a single by Jesse Osborne.
Graham awaits the pairings for the 2-A State playoffs, which begins Tuesday May 19th. |
