Graham Futball Beats Cummings
October 23, 2008 By Denis Vass of Graham High School
Graham boy's soccer team took out a season's worth of frustration on visiting Cummings last night, to win their fisrt match of the 2008 season 4-2. Unfortunately, it was also Graham's last game of the 2008 campaign. Graham's Stephen Velasques put Graham on the board at 26:50 with a booming 25 yard direct kick following a Cavalier foul. Cummings reataliated just minutes later, scoring at the 35:15 mark to tie the game. The 1st half ended in a 1-1 tie. The 2nd half had the home crowd abuzz most of all the 40 minutes, as Graham pushed and willed their way to 3 goals. Graham's Chilino got the Red Devils rolling at 49:35, blasting a rebound shot past Cummings goal keeper to give Graham the lead they never relinquished. At 60:50, Senior Trey Ward, in his 2nd attempt at a legal goal, pushed the ball past the charging Cummings keeper to push Graham's lead to 3-0. (His 1st goal was negated by an offside call) 3 minutes later, Cummings was awarded a penalty kick, which they converted, to cut Graham's lead to 3-2. It was all Graham after that, keeping the ball away from the Cavalier attackers. Graham's Cody Dix converted a beautiful curving corner kick from Stephen Velasquez with a nifty head ball at 75:50. Thanks to all the Red Devil soccer players for playing hard all year long despite all the heartache and agony of defeat each game. |
