Graham Downs Raleigh Charter

In a Mid-State 2-A Conference tilt last night, Graham's varsity teams rolled over host Raleigh Charter played at Cary Academy. The girls (15-1, 11-0) rolled 50-23, while the boys (10-7, 8-3) squashed the Phoenix 84-57.
In the evening's opening game, Graham's defense turned up the heat, holding Raleigh Charter to zero 1st quarter baskets while racing to a 14-0 lead. Raleigh Charter scored it's 1st basket at the 6:30 mark of the 2nd period, but the damage had already been done as Graham extended their lead to 23-10 at the half. Graham forced Raleigh Charter into a 19% shooting night (10-53).
Graham's defense again showed their dominance in the 3rd quarter, as they pressed the Phoenix into numerous turnovers and held them to 4 3rd quarter points while pushing the margin to 38-14 after 3 periods.
Senior Beth Miller led Graham with 16 points, 7 steals, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists. Sophomore Shelby Hall turned in a stellar defensive performance, snagging 11 rebounds and providing 2 blocks. Caroline Enoch added 7 rebounds. Kiki Allen dished out 5 assists, while Kaila Lea had 4 steals. Every member on the team contributed in the scorebook.
Hannah Deeters led Raleigh Charter with 8 points, while Lindsey Creech contributed 7.
In the nightcap, Graham's boys fought through the whistle brigade, as they were called for 12 1st quarter fouls, enabling the Phoenix to stick around and make things interesting. Graham led 23-15 after one period of play. In the 2nd period, Raleigh Charter's Charles Etoroma hit 2 three point shots to keep the Phoenix in striking distance as Graham only led by 15 at the half, 43-28. Etoroma had 4 three point baskets for the game and led all scorers with 18 points. After the break, the Red Devils put their pitchforks to work, hitting their first 6 baskets and befuddling the Phoenix with a suffocating full-court press as Graham put the game out of reach, holding Raleigh Charter to 3 baskets and 10 points. Graham led 67-38 after 3 points. Marquise Richmond scored 8 of his team-high 17 points in the 3rd, as Michael Wooten hit 2 three point basktes for 8 of his 15 points.
Graham's defense forced Raleigh Charter to resort to 3 point shooting most of the 2nd half, as they hoisted 18 beyond the arc. For the game, the Phoenix attempted 28 of their 58 shots from downtown.
Marquise Richmond led Graham witn 17 points and 11 rebounds. Blake Throneburg had his second straight strong performance, addind 8 points and 10 rebounds. Ryan Henderson and Damien Wiley added 7 points each.
Graham returns to action tonight in a pivotal mens match as Cedar Ridge comes to Graham. |
